We're Subtext. A small queer-owned studio in Glasgow making limited edition apparel for people who are angry, horny, and not willing to pick just one.

We started because we were bored of sustainable fashion that asks nothing of anyone. There's a reason the eco-friendly aisle is full of beige — beige doesn't offend anyone. Beige is what you wear when you've decided the status quo is basically fine, actually. We think that's a political choice, and a deeply unsexy one.

We've always believed that desire is political, that joy is resistance, and that humour is a weapon people keep forgetting to use. Our pieces range from the quietly subversive to the outright filthy. Some will get a smutty wink from the right person across a bar. Some will make your friends snort on the tube. Some will do both, which is the dream.

Everything we make is limited to 666 units worldwide, printed on 100% organic cotton with vegan-friendly inks, shipped without a scrap of plastic. Ethical from blank tee to your front door. Because sustainable fashion shouldn't require you to be boring about it, and the revolution shouldn't require you to be unsexy about it.

We're small, we're queer, and we're having a very good time. When a design sells out it's gone — no restocks, no scaling up, no watering things down for a broader audience. Some people give up and go beige. Hot babes come here.

Wear your values. Make it interesting.

100% organic cotton

Our blanks are made from GOTS-certified organic ringspun combed cotton — which means no pesticides, no synthetic fertilisers, and a significantly lower environmental footprint than conventional cotton. It also just feels better. Soft, durable, and worth keeping for years, which is kind of the whole point.

vegan-friendly OEKO-TEX certified inks

We print using water-based, vegan-friendly inks that are OEKO-TEX certified — independently tested and proven free from harmful substances. No heavy metals, no nasties, nothing you'd feel weird about wearing against your skin all day. Most print-on-demand operations use plastisol inks. We don't. Small detail, big difference.

plastic-free packaging

Your order arrives in 100% plastic-free, biodegradable packaging. No poly mailers, no bubble wrap, no little plastic stickers you have to peel off and feel guilty about. We've thought about every part of the unboxing experience so you don't have to think about where to put the rubbish.

ethical production practices

Our blanks are Stanley/Stella, certified by the Fair Wear Foundation and GOTS — meaning independent auditors verify working conditions from cotton farm to finished garment. Teemill, our print and fulfilment partner, operates SA8000-certified factories powered entirely by renewable energy. No fashion brand anywhere can yet prove every worker in their supply chain earns a living wage — that's a structural problem built into how the global garment industry works. We're actively asking questions of our suppliers and we'll update this page when we have better answers.
